Instagram Shadowban: How to Check and Remove It

An Instagram shadowban is a situation where your account isn't blocked, but your posts and Reels suddenly stop being shown to new people. Reach drops, there are almost no views from recommendations and hashtags, and there's no notification at all. Let's look at how to tell a real restriction from an ordinary dip, how to check your account status and what to do to get your reach back.
What an Instagram shadowban really is
Instagram doesn't officially use the word "shadowban". But the platform openly acknowledges that it can limit recommendations: content that violates the rules or the Recommendation Guidelines (allowed, but not desirable to show to strangers) doesn't make it into Explore, recommended Reels and other places where people who don't follow you see you.
In other words, your followers can still see your posts, but new viewers can't. For an account that grows through recommendations, that's almost the same as growth stopping.
Signs of a shadowban
No single sign proves anything on its own, but several together are a reason to check your account:
- A sharp drop in reach with no change in content or posting frequency: not by 10–20%, but several times over.
- Almost no views from Explore or from non-followers. A post's insights show what share of its reach came from people who don't follow you.
- Reels stopped reaching beyond your followers, even though they used to regularly get more.
- Almost no new followers at the same level of activity.
- A notification about a removed post or a warning about a rule violation shortly before the drop.
Important: reach naturally fluctuates. Seasonality, algorithm changes, weaker content: all of these lower the numbers too. More on other causes in the article why Instagram reach is dropping.
How to check for a shadowban
1. Account Status
This is the main and official tool. Open your profile → ☰ menu → "Settings and activity" → "Account Status" (the item names may differ slightly depending on the app version).
There you can see:
- whether any content was removed and why;
- whether your content can be recommended to people who don't follow you;
- whether any features are restricted.
If the recommendations section shows a warning, that's the "shadowban". You can often appeal the decision right there.
2. Post insights
Compare your last few posts with those from a month or two ago. Look at the share of reach from non-followers and at the sources of impressions. If the share of non-followers has dropped almost to zero, a restriction is likely.
3. Checking from another account
Ask a friend who doesn't follow you to find your latest Reel or post through search or a hashtag. This isn't an accurate test, since search and hashtags show far from everything, but it works as an extra signal.
Third-party "shadowban checker" sites have no access to Instagram's internal data. Don't enter your login and password there.
What causes a shadowban
The most common causes, both those the platform itself mentions and those creators run into:
- Community Guidelines violations: even one removed post can temporarily limit recommendations.
- Borderline content: provocative images, shocking scenes, medical or financial promises, gambling.
- Unoriginal content: reposts of other people's videos, clips with watermarks from other platforms. Instagram explicitly favors original content in recommendations.
- Spam behavior: mass following and unfollowing, identical comments under other people's posts, mass messages in Direct.
- Third-party apps with access to your account: auto-follow and auto-like services and "analyzers" you gave your login and password to.
- The same hashtags under every post and hashtags used for spam.
- Sudden unnatural spikes in activity: thousands of actions in a few minutes on a small account.
How to remove an Instagram shadowban
Step 1. Check your status and appeal
If "Account Status" shows removed content or a restriction you believe is a mistake, file an appeal. This is done right in the same section.
Step 2. Remove problematic content
Go through your recent posts. If something may violate the rules or looks like a repost, it's better to delete or archive it.
Step 3. Revoke third-party access
"Settings" → "Accounts Center" → "Password and security" and the section on connected apps and websites. Disconnect everything you gave your login to and change your password. Turn on two-factor authentication.
Step 4. Pause aggressive actions
For a week or two, stop mass following, identical comments and any automation. Post as usual, but without sudden moves.
Step 5. Create original content
Your own videos, your own voiceover, no one else's watermarks. This is especially important for Reels; we wrote about what affects reach in the article Reels: what affects reach.
Step 6. Give it time
A recommendation restriction usually isn't permanent. If there are no more violations, reach gradually recovers: for some in a few days, for others in a few weeks. Instagram doesn't name a specific timeframe.
SMM services and the shadowban
Can buying followers get you restricted? The main risk isn't the fact itself but the method:
- Services that need your password. They act from inside your account: mass following, liking, messaging. This kind of activity is exactly what most often looks like spam.
- Sudden unnatural spikes. 10,000 followers in an hour on an account with 300 followers is a noticeable anomaly.
InstaHub doesn't need a password, only a link to the profile or post, so nobody does anything inside your account. But even here moderate speed and natural proportions matter: choose gradual delivery, don't order everything at once and keep a balance between followers, likes and views. More on this in the article account safety when using SMM services. To be honest: no service can guarantee that Instagram will never restrict an account, because the platform's algorithms are closed.
How not to get shadowbanned again
- Check "Account Status" regularly, especially after a drop in reach.
- Post original content and don't take other people's videos without permission.
- Don't give your password to third-party services.
- Don't perform mass actions manually or through bots.
- Vary your hashtag set to fit the topic of each post, and don't put dozens of identical ones under every post.
- Build up activity gradually, without sudden spikes.
Questions & answers
Does the Instagram shadowban officially exist?
Instagram doesn't use that term, but the platform can officially limit how content is shown to people who don't follow you. You can check this in the "Account Status" section.
How long does a shadowban last?
There is no fixed period. After problematic content is removed and spam actions stop, reach usually recovers within a few days or weeks.
Will deleting and reposting a post help?
Mostly no. If the problem is with the account, reposting won't change anything, and identical posts may look like spam.
Are SMM services safe when it comes to shadowbans?
The biggest risk is services that need your password. At InstaHub, orders are placed using only a link, and moderate speed and natural proportions reduce the risk. No one can fully guarantee there will be no restrictions.
Will switching to a business or personal account help?
The account type alone doesn't remove a restriction. What matters is eliminating the cause: violations, unoriginal content or spam activity.
