Reels: what really affects reach

Instagram does not publish the exact recommendation formula, but the general principles have long been known from the platform's official advice and creators' experience: Reels are shown further if real viewers watch them for a long time, rewatch them, save them and send them to friends. Here is what affects that.
The first 1–2 seconds
Viewers decide whether to keep scrolling almost instantly. Strong openings:
- the result right away: a before/after, the finished piece, the final shot;
- a question or problem: "Why does your cake crack?";
- movement in the frame from the first second, with no long intros or logos.
Holding attention
- Keep it short. For a start, 7–20 seconds: it is easier to watch to the end.
- Dynamics. Changing the shot every 2–3 seconds holds attention.
- A loop. If the end flows smoothly into the beginning, the video is rewatched more often.
Text and sound
- Captions or on-screen text — a large share of people watch without sound.
- Trending sounds can help, but only if they fit the content.
- Originality. Instagram favors original content; videos with other platforms' watermarks usually get shown less.
Saves and shares
The most valuable reactions are saves and sends to friends. They are earned by videos that:
- teach something in 15 seconds ("3 ways to…");
- offer a ready solution or a roundup;
- trigger an emotion people want to share.
Add a call to action: "Save it so you don't lose it" — it works.
Consistency and analysis
Post 3–5 Reels a week and look at the stats: average watch time, completion rate, saves. Repeat the formats that work and drop the ones that don't.
Questions & answers
Should I delete Reels that got few views?
Usually not: a video can take off later, and deleting does not improve your profile stats. It is better to analyze why it didn't work and make the next one differently.
Do hashtags affect Reels reach?
Hashtags help Instagram understand the topic, but they are not the main factor. 3–5 precise hashtags that match the video's topic are enough.
