The YouTube Partner Program unlocks ads on videos, memberships, Super Thanks and other ways to earn. But to apply, a channel must meet minimum requirements. Here is what they are, how to reach them faster and what you'd better avoid.
What requirements you need to meet
YouTube has two entry levels into the Partner Program. The numbers may change, so check them in YouTube Help for your country before applying.
Basic level (fan funding: memberships, Super Thanks, Super Chat):
- 500 subscribers;
- 3 public videos in the last 90 days;
- 3,000 watch hours of long-form videos in 12 months or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days.
Full level (ads on videos):
- 1,000 subscribers;
- 4,000 watch hours of long-form videos in 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days.
Besides the numbers, the channel must comply with YouTube's policies, have two-factor authentication and a linked AdSense account.
What affects watch hours the most
Watch hours are the hardest part. You can gain subscribers from a few successful Shorts, while 4,000 hours require long videos that people watch to the end.
- Longer videos with good retention. A 10-20 minute video watched 40% on average gives many times more hours than short clips.
- Playlists and series. A viewer who watches a series back to back builds up hours naturally.
- The first 30 seconds. Say right away what the viewer will get, without long intros.
- End screens and cards pointing to the next video.
- Live streams. Watch hours from streams count too, as long as the recording stays public.
How to get subscribers faster
- Shorts are the fastest way to bring new people to a channel. Make short cuts from long videos with a link to the full version.
- A call to subscribe at the moment when the viewer has already gotten value, not at the start.
- Thumbnails and titles that promise a specific result: "How to do X in 10 minutes".
- Consistency: one video a week is better than five in a month followed by silence.
Does promotion help
Starter subscribers and views help a new channel not look empty: people find it easier to subscribe where an audience already exists. But for monetization it is important to understand:
A safer approach is to boost videos that already hold attention well: that way the algorithm shows them to real people more often, and hours grow naturally.
Checklist before applying
- Two-factor authentication is enabled on your Google account.
- No community guidelines strikes or warnings.
- No content on the channel that belongs to someone else without permission (music, movie clips).
- An AdSense account is created.
- Videos comply with advertiser-friendly rules (no shocking content, etc.).
After you apply, the review usually takes a few weeks. Keep publishing videos during this time: an active channel looks more convincing.
Questions & answers
Do Shorts views count toward the 4,000 hours?
No, Shorts are counted separately, as 10 million views in 90 days. Watch hours come from long-form videos.
Do hidden or deleted videos count?
Hours from deleted and hidden videos are not counted. So don't delete old videos that have gained views.
How long does the review take?
Usually from a few days to a month. If the application is rejected, you can reapply 30 days after fixing the reasons.
